Anyone else remember those idiotic wallet sized "backpacks" that were fashionable back in the mid 90s? I saw someone wearing one the other day. I bet they're "retro" now. Blech. :-P

i don't know about wallet sized, but the mini backpacks that were basically an alternative to fanny packs, yes. my mom still uses one for a purse. i told her it looked dorky and she said "i don't care, it's perfect for me" so yeah...
Small backpacks are great! They allow for things like convincing airport security that a backpack is a "purse/personal item," when of course it hold much more than the average purse. It also has the advantage of leaving your hands free if you want are a female doing things that require carrying a little bit of stuff, but not so much stuff that you would want a big backpack. Maybe the kind that you're talking about are smaller, but I find that most mini-backpacks are perfect for carrying a novel, water bottle, keys, wallet, and calendar book. A truly brilliant invention, but not to be worn to formal balls.
I speak not of backpacks that are merely "small", but of those that are "tiny". I wasn't exaggerating when I said "wallet-sized", and small wallets at that. If you took the straps off, they'd fit in a pocket, easily.
Just so long as we don't get french-rolled jeans and poofy bangs that take half-a-can of hairspray...
